B'nai B'rith Center for Senior Services
|
The mission of the B’nai B’rith Center for Senior Services is to become the central address for Jewish seniors (age 50 and above) throughout the United States and beyond, and seeks to deliver life-enhancing senior services while being fully supportive of the goals and visions of B'nai B'rith International. The Center is composed of two types of housing facilities: Subsidized Housing and Market Rate Housing.
- Subsidized Housing
Today, B'nai B'rith is the largest national Jewish sponsor of federally subsidized housing for the elderly in the United States. For over three decades, B'nai B'rith, through its Senior Housing Committee, which convenes semi-annually, has been involved in a cooperative partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to make available affordable rental apartments for low income senior citizens. B'nai B'rith senior housing is open to all qualified individuals as defined by HUD, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, handicap or national origin. The B'nai B'rith Senior Housing Network in the United States consists of 36 apartment buildings located in 25 communities, which encompass over 4,000 apartment units serving over 6,000 qualified persons.
In addition to our facilities within the United States, the overseas districts and lodges of B'nai B'rith have developed a variety of housing alternatives in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. Funded through their own national programs, and tailored to meet the particular needs of the host countries, these projects remain a vital component in the overall B'nai B'rith International Senior Housing Program.
- Market Rate Housing
As individuals continue to live longer, many are seeking alternatives to remaining in their homes. Many find that long time neighbors have moved away, the maintenance of their home is increasingly burdensome, and often they find themselves socially isolated.
Some individuals make the decision to move from their current home to a senior community when they are still very healthy, while others may delay the decision until an adult child and/or physician intercedes.
For seniors who can afford to pay the prevailing rate for housing in their area, and want to take advantage of the social, health and wellness programs available to them, market-rate housing offers an attractive alternative. Senior communities like Covenant at South Hills, which is a Life Care Retirement Community, offer a variety of social activities, health and wellness programs and allow individuals to age in place and move through the levels of care from independent living, assisted living with a dementia unit, and skilled nursing.
- Senior Services and Advocacy
BBI works to meet the needs of seniors by advocating for seniors in Washington, helping older people to access needed services and by providing up to date information on our web site, in the new seniors magazine, Prime Time Living, and through Senior Update.
